The night of the governor’s cookout, the politician had told Jack he would see him any time. Even so, when he called to set up an appointment, he was surprised when the man’s assistant told him that the governor would be free at one-thirty. Not wanting to lose his access, Jack arrived early only to be asked to wait. He sat in the outer office thumbing through pamphlets and watching the secretary take call after call, At first glance Jack thought she was in her early twenties, but after more than forty-five minutes of studying her face and eyes, he was convinced she was in her thirties. Growing bored with the provided reading, he began thumbing through his notes.

He checked his watch every few minutes until it was well after two. Between two of the constant phone calls Jack reminded the young woman of the time. She simply told him he would have to wait and sent him back to his seat.

To his surprise, she announced the governor was ready for him a few minutes later. She pointed him to the door then lowered her eyes to her work. He thanked the top of her head and approached the door. The dark stained oak and brass nameplate reminded Jack of Donald Mitchell’s door at the bank. He knocked slightly and, when he heard the governor’s voice, let himself in.

“Detective Mallory,” the governor greeted him. “So good to see you again.”

“Governor Mitchell,” Jack shook Steve’s outstretched hand. “Thank you for agreeing to see me.”

“Well, it's like I said last night,” Steve sat behind his desk, a large maple executive style piece. “I want to help in any way I can.”

“Yes. You did say that,” Jack nodded. “And I hope you meant it.”

“Of course I meant it,” Steve said. “Where shall we begin?”

“Let’s start with you telling me everything you can about your daughter,” Jack flipped open his notepad. “Who were her friends? What did she do with her time? How many boyfriends did she have before she started dating Timothy Waters? That kind of thing.”

Steve remained silent for a long time. He was thinking very hard about the questions. Jack suspected the politician would not answer until he had thought out exactly what he would say and what repercussions the answers might have. The questions were obviously not ones he expected.

“Detective,” he finally said. “I really don’t know what to tell you.”

“Just tell me what you know,” Jack prompted.

“That’s just it,” Steve leaned back in his seat letting it recline slightly. “I was mayor then. The firemen were threatening to strike. The plans for the new highway were being challenged and I was working on gaining support for my bid for governor. As ashamed as I am to say so, I don’t know the answers to what you’re asking. I didn’t know my daughter very well. I didn’t meet many of her friends. The ones I met, I didn’t know their names. I don’t know what she did for fun. And as for boyfriends, well .
